PROYECTO EDITORIAL

TECHNICAL INSPECTION

Painting in Chile, 1980 -2010

The Technical Inspection project represents a logical continuation to Oil Change exhibition and catalogue, which were presented between March and May 2003 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago. This exhibition, curated, originated and produced by Víctor Hugo Bravo, Jorge González and Mario Z, compiled the personal tastes of the three curators-artists, thereby creating a curating system that could be thought of as anomalous when compared to what had been developed until that date, as it gave rise to conections and dispersions, which, at that particular time, fostered the visibility and discussion of Chilean painting in recent years. The aim of the artists-curators was to add fresh drive to the curating aspect as well as to the management one: the kind of drive that would propose new interpretations for the subject of painting in Chile. The possibility to ascertain the fact that this project came to fill a gap in both the exhibition and publishing lines becomes particularly meaningful since, up to that time, not a project had been carried out that could draw the attendance of such a number of painters – a total of 40 – while proposing a sense of general re-enchantment with the pictorial visuality.

On the other hand, as far as publishing is concerned, not since Chilean Painting, the book by Milan Ivelic and Gaspar Galaz, in which the authors compiled the pictorial visuality up to the year 1983, had such an exhaustive record of new authors and creative proposals been made.

Notwithstanding the fact that Oil Change has fulfilled the expectations of its creators to a large extent, nowadays there is still a real lack of knowledge about the Chilean painting that is more critical, investigative, absurd, ironical and even commercial, at its less banal level.

Technical Inspection aims to be the kind of participative research material that will contribute towards a better understanding of Chilean art over the last decades. The nature of the reasons for trying this new platform is diverse: the need to cover a special period of the History of Painting in Chile, to understand the many paths followed by a part of the Chilean art scene with regard to the visual art - particularly to painting - , to visualize the new market scenes and platforms it originated, to salvage the works that have faded out of the national imagination, but owing to their importance, need to be updated and confronted with new proposals and new authors.

This new editorial project proposes axes of primarily two types: the first axis would be of editorial nature while the second one would involve the dissemination of information, thus making it possible to distance oneself from the efforts made by Editorial Origo and the book by Ricardo Bindis, from the listing under the charge of Cecilia Valdes, as well as from Art Gallery - related attempts by ArtEspacio, Isabel Aninat, Cecilia Palma and even Tomas Andreu, who have left out of their respective projects a great number of authors who did not fall within the scope of their editorial lines.

Technical Inspection’s aim is to increase the list of 40 artists who have been invited to participate in the Oil Change exhibition to a total of 100 by adding 60 more participants. This time, the objective focuses on recovering a line that is more related to the historical aspect, while contemplating the inclusion of authors whose participation had not been considered for a number of reasons.

Regarding editorial terms, the artists will be presented in alphabetical order so as to allow the confrontation of visual material, which would be otherwise difficult to contrast.

Technical Inspection intends to expand the vision of the pictorial exercise by showing, above all, the creators and their works, which would lead to a better reading of the pieces that make them up, as well as the understanding of the lines of action, detours and desertions that may have occurred with every artist and that, in general terms, create the instance for making questions and giving answers about the state of the contemporary Chilean painting. This interpretation does not seek to be regarded as the definitive word on the subject, but it does aim to include pictorial exercises that, in their own time, have been a surprise to the setting wherein they developed. The book considers the inclusion of two pieces of texts: one of them by Ana María Risco, the other by Gonzalo Pedraza. In addition, new museographies will be created under the direction of Nadinne Canto. This will be a bilingual edition supported by an information blog.

The book as such comprises 450, 28 x 21 cm, pages when closed, printed in 4/4 colours, on 170g Opaque Couche paper for inner pages, and 350g Opaque Couche paper for cover with flaps printed in 4/1 colours, Opaque Poly Thermal Laminating, seam thread and Hot Melt covers.
